Take Bliss as it is for coffee, wine, good food

Take Bliss as it is for coffee, wine, good food

Coffee If you feel like shrimp, they come prepared two different ways asan entree, or you can have three fat ones as an appetizer with anexcellent sweet-sour cucumber salad. The appetizer shrimp areswimming in a Grand Marnier barbecue sauce, although it could justas well have had a splash of Mountain Dew as liqueur. The sauce issimply too fiery to taste of anything but heat.

The kitchen had its ups and downs. A shrimp bisque, smooth as cream- probably because it contained so much cream - had just the rightdelicate texture (so you can pretend it's lighter than it reallyis) and was filled with chopped shrimp. It was a minor tour deforce. But the halibut decorated with big lumps of crab meat, aspecial that night, had a lime butter sauce that tasted of nothingmuch. It arrived with mashed potatoes and the vegetable of the day, cauliflower. Even adding a wedge of lime and a pink orchid didn'tmake the all-white plate look any less bland than it tasted. Muchas I like cauliflower, and I do, it isn't a good vegetable of theday to serve with potatoes.

Minor improvements could make a big difference. The "vegetarianrose," a sort of pasta primavera, is made with cappellini, a creamytomato sauce and grilled vegetables. The flavors are wonderful;it's the proportions that are off. More vegetables and less pastaand sauce, please.

The cheese plate, really for two, has port wine cheddar, sharpcheddar and smoked Gouda. It's supposed to come with strawberries, grapes and kiwi slices; but bing cherries were substituted for kiwislices. That was fine - more than fine, really. But the red grapeshad been taken off their stems so there was just an unattractivepile of loose grapes. Also, the kitchen had added slices of salamiand a blob of spicy mustard to the plate, which was a little odd.

The dessert made in-house was the weakest of the ones we tried. Thechef, who brought it out (the place was so busy the poor guy washelping out the servers when he wasn't cooking), apologized becausethe chocolate mousse in a chocolate cup was too stiff and hadlittle lumps. Good flavor, though. The Key lime pie and berry tart, made by someone local, were both excellent.

Bliss' wine list is filled with familiar names and easy-drinkingbottles. The list isn't extensive, but it changes periodically andis affordably priced, with enough choices by the glass. You mightthink a place that labels itself a wine bar would put more emphasison wine; this is more just what you'd expect at a nice restaurant.

And that's what Bliss is. If you go in with a preconceived notionof what a coffeehouse or wine bar should be, you might bedisappointed. If you accept it as a nice suburban restaurant with awarm and welcoming staff and a kitchen that can produce some verygood food, you'll be happier. So it needs to get a few kinks out. It's still a better option than the chains in the area.

Morning Coffee: Utah State's QB in question

Morning Coffee: Utah State's QB in question

Coffee Posted by ESPN.com's Graham Watson

The decision of who will start at quarterback for Utah State justgot a little more difficult. Junior Jase McCormick, who played infour games last season and was expected to challenge for thestarting position during fall camp, told coach Brent Guy that

he might walk away from football, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Saturday evening.

McCormick completed 62.5 percent of his passes, but threw fiveinterceptions as opposed to two touchdowns. Senior Sean Setzer, theonly other quarterback with experience, becomes the frontrunner forthe starting position. He played in one game last season andcompleted one pass for two yards.

The article also notes the emergence of true freshman ExavierJohnson, who looked strong in the Aggies first practice.

My take: This isn't great news for coach Brent Guy, who needs toshow improvement on his 6-29 record during the last three seasons. The good news is that this Guy's first team full of his guys. Ithas 17 seniors, which should help with leadership and finally hasits full array of scholarship athletes.

Several non-BCS teams have started or will start practice thisweekend and Monday. As I've noted a couple times this past week, Iwill be at Utah for its opening practice. I will be chatting livefrom camp at 11:30 EST (9:30 MST) for a half hour.

Starbucks chokes on its latte

Starbucks chokes on its latte

What has happened to the siren's magic? For more than two decades along-tressed maiden more decorous now than when she wasfirst launched upon the world has been the centrepiece ofone of America's best-known commercial logos, that familiar greencircle with "Starbucks Coffee" in white letters, to be found, seemingly, on almost every city block and main street in the land.

And until lately, the allure of the Starbucks siren had beenirresistible. Howard Schultz, the visionary businessman who ineffect founded today's Starbucks when he bought out its originalowners in 1987, ran the company until 2000. In the process hecreated not just a runaway business success but a small revolutionin American culture. A handful of outlets in Seattle have become aglobal empire of some 15,000 stores, generating annual sales ofabout $10bn (£5bn).

But the company that was a case study in business acumen and grewto be the largest coffeehouse chain in the world is now a casestudy of a less flattering variety – of how complacency andthe laws of the marketplace can bring even the mightiest low.

This year the creeping crisis at Starbucks has exploded into fullview. In January, it sacked its chief executive Jim Donald, andrestored Mr Schultz to his former job. April brought a 28 per centslump in quarterly profit, and news that the company would againcut the number of new stores it planned to open across the UnitedStates, to 600 less than initially planned, and trim its officeworkforce by up to 1,000.

Last month, the trickle of bad news turned into a flood. Some 500stores across America are to be shut, with the loss of 12,000 full-and part-time jobs. And the rot has spread farther afield.Starbucks is closing 61 of its 85 stores in Australia –meaning that henceforth only the residents of Sydney, Brisbane andMelbourne will be able to sample its wares. This week brought thelatest blow, the company's first quarterly loss in 15 years, of$6.7m, compared with a $158m profit a year before.

At one level the news is anything but surprising. The US isengulfed by its worst economic crisis in decades, and consumers arecutting back on non-essential spending, with expensive coffee amongthe first things to go. There is a symmetry too between thetroubles of Starbucks and those of the plummeting US housingmarket, the epicentre of the crisis.

California and Florida, where the company has been opening newstores and which account for one-third of its domestic revenue, aretwo of the states worst hit by the housing slump. As demand hasfallen, the cost of dairy products such as milk have been risingsharply. Not just Starbucks, but any similar business, would behaving problems in these circumstances.

But there is far more to it than that. Starbucks' malaise longpredates the downturn of 2007/2008. In a sense it is a victim ofits very success. Consciously or subconsciously, a company thatstarted life as an exotic shop in the Seattle landmark of PikePlace Market, selling beans and coffee-making equipment, and thendeveloped into one of America's smartest global brands, must havefelt it could do no wrong. In the process, however, it forgot whereit came from.

From the outset, the key to Starbucks success was its upmarketimage. Its coffeehouses were where yuppies went, and those whoaspired to be like them. That the coffee itself was a miteexpensive only added to its snob appeal: Starbucks was not for thehoi polloi. If you wanted cheap coffee, then go to a diner andchoose between regular and de-caf. Its stores were chic andfashionable, where you could spend a little downtime betweenappointments or simply shoot the breeze with friends. Starbucksprojected itself as "The Third Place" – between home and theoffice – and there was much truth to the slogan. Mr Schultz'sgenius was to grasp the market for the concept.

Have a good idea though, and others will copy it. For a long whileStarbucks managed to keep ahead of the game, expanding at breakneckspeed, buying up likely competitors and launching new products thatrivals could not match. On top of lattes, grandes, mochas, espressos, frappuccinos and the rest it offered not just teadrinks, fruit smoothies ice creams and its own range of snacks.Starbucks sold its own franchised merchandise – T-shirts,even its own books and music.

But premium coffee remained the basic product – and oneothers could easily imitate. Of late that challenge has been pickedup by Dunkin' Donuts and above all by McDonalds. In an age ofbelt-tightening the virtues of thift are again evident. McDonalds'coffee was perhaps once best known for being scaldingly hot. Now itoffers premium coffee, not only cheaper than Starbucks' but of aquality that won first place in a survey in March by ConsumerReports here.

As a result, Starbucks finds itself caught in a new, unweclome,"third place", pressed from below by the fast-food chains from whomits very ubiquity has made it almost indistinguishable in thepublic mind, and from above by a new generation of expensive andexclusive coffee houses – to the modern industry whatStarbucks was 20 years ago.

Such an identity crisis would be bad enough on its own. ButStarbucks has compounded the problem by, in Mr Schultz' words,"cannibalising" itself – opening so many stores, so closetogether, that they attract business not from new customers buteach other. And even the quality may be sagging. In a recentindependent taste test of the main coffee chains in the UK,Starbucks came bottom.

For such structural difficulties, the chief executive admits, thereis no instant fix. The giddy growth of yesteryear will neverreturn, even when the US economy picks up. A solution, almostcertainly, will require a return to first principles. As Mr Schultztold analysts this week, discussing that first-in-15-yearsquarterly loss: " We are not going to go down the fast-food laneand do things that are ... not in the long-term interest of thebrand and the experience."

It would be unwise to count Mr Schultz and Starbucks out, whateverthe current travails. The loss reflected exceptional costs relatingto the closure of 600 stores, and the next quarter will be back inthe black. Wall Street is cheered by the company's readiness toface up to its difficulties. Some foreign markets are still faringwell, and Starbucks is still looking expand in areas such asEastern Europe. New products, among them a milder "regular" coffeecalled Pike Place Roast, have also been introduced at its 11,000American stores. But it will be a while, if ever, before theStarbucks siren regains her former magic.

How a coffee empire was built

1971: Gordon Bowker, Jerry Baldwin and Ziv Siegl open their firststore, selling coffee beans and coffee-making equipment, inSeattle's Pike Place Market. It is named Starbucks after the firstmate in Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

1982: Howard Shultz joins the company as the director of retailoperations and marketing. It begins providing coffee to restaurantsand espresso bars in addition to its own five stores. Shultz, having seen coffee bars in Italy, convinces the founders to try thesame idea in Seattle.

1984: The trial was successful and Starbucks as we know it islaunched. Separately, Shultz creates the company Il Giornale, selling products made from Starbucks coffee beans.

1987: Il Giornale acquires Starbucks assets and it morphs intoStarbucks Corporation, opening stores in Chicago and Vancouver. Itloses money throughout the 1980s as it expands. By 1989 it has 55stores.

1991: The privately owned company offers stock options to employeesand in 1992, starts trading on Nasdaq. It also sets up shops inBarnes and Noble bookstores and Nordstrom department stores and in1994 started providing coffee to ITT/Sheraton hotels (nowStarwood).

Mid-nineties: Starbucks branches out with various deals thatinclude making coffee ice cream with Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream, apartnership with PepsiCo to sell bottled Frappuccino drinks and alicensing deal with Kraft Foods to sell its brand in supermarkets. It also expands overseas, in Asia and then the UK, where it buysthe Seattle Coffee Company chain. It launches a music businessthrough its acquisition Hear Music and also buys Tazo, anOregon-based tea company.

2000: Mr Shultz becomes chairman and chief global strategist, ceding the post of chief executive.

2004: It jumps on the Wi-Fi bandwagon, offering high-speed wirelessinternet access in many restaurants. Through Hear Music, itreleases Ray Charles's Genius Loves Company CD with ConcordRecords, which goes on to win eight Grammy Awards. A new recordlabel is created between Starbucks and Concord Music Group todistribute recordings. Paul McCartney becomes the first artist, in2007, to sign.

2007: After falling sales, Jim Donald, the chief executive, quits.Shultz returns to that role and announces that the group will slowUS growth and accelerate international expansion. Starbucks now has15,756.

2008: Starbucks cuts jobs and close stores worldwide.

Banking on a new coffee shop

Banking on a new coffee shop

People who work in a downtown Roanoke high-rise office building orwho park in its adjacent garage now are an appetizing customerniche for a local coffee retailer.

For a little more than a week, Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea hasbeen brewing its java and other beverages in the lobby of theWachovia Tower at the corner of South Jefferson Street and SalemAvenue. The coffee and food retailer has opened a shop in a250-square-foot space beside the tower's security desk.

The arrival of the new shop comes after Mill Mountain shifted itsdowntown store to new digs at 117 Campbell Ave. in May.

Demand for java from the Wachovia Tower's approximately 400employees inspired Mill Mountain's expansion into the officebuilding.

Dennis Cronk of Poe & Cronk Real Estate Group said heapproached the coffee retailer about opening a shop in the lobby.Poe & Cronk manages and leases the office building.

"We have a lot of people who have requested over the years that weprovide a similar amenity," Cronk said.

By serving coffee, tea and other beverages, Mill Mountain hopes toentice people who work for companies located in the tower or whopass through its lobby from the parking garage. The potential ofdrawing a lucrative customer base appears high.

About 550 people will work inside the Wachovia Tower oncearchitectural and engineering firm Hayes, Seay, Mattern &Mattern moves into the building by the end of the year, Cronk said. That move will add about 160 employees.

Cronk estimated that more than 100 people park their vehicles inthe tower's parking garage, though they do not work inside thetower. Many stroll through its lobby to get to their officeselsewhere in downtown, he said.

The Wachovia Tower already is 96 percent occupied, Cronk added. Itopened in 1991, rises 20 floors and houses approximately 218,000square feet of office space, he said.

Luis Murillo, who is district manager for Mill Mountain, describedthe retailer's new Wachovia Tower space as a convenient stop forcustomers and a "good opportunity" for its business.

Unlike some of Mill Mountain's other Roanoke Valley locations, thissmall shop does not serve a full breakfast menu. It sells muffins, scones, cookies, yogurt and other grab-and-go foods.

Customers, however, can place orders for lunch. Sandwiches andother fare on Mill Mountain's lunch menu are prepared at itsCampbell Avenue location and delivered to the tower shop.

Already, there has been early demand for lunch delivery. On itsfirst day open, Mill Mountain sold at least three lunches at thetower location, Murillo said.

This coffee retailer has a history in the Roanoke Valley. DaveJohnson opened Mill Mountain's first shop in downtown Roanoke in1990. Since then, the retailer has grown to include three otherlocations in the Roanoke Valley and two in Richmond. One is acoffee kiosk inside a Richmond hospital.

For now, the Wachovia Tower shop opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 2p.m. Eventually, the afternoon hours may expand depending oncustomer traffic, Murillo said.

And Mill Mountain may not be done growing in the Roanoke Valley.Murillo said plans are brewing for an additional location, but hewould not disclose details.

Coffee culture grinds Starbucks' Australian operation

Coffee culture grinds Starbucks' Australian operation

Coffee culture grinds Starbucks' Australian operation

SYDNEY (AFP) — Starbucks hit a roadblock trying to export itsbusiness model to Australia, a robust coffee culture wherecustomers already knew the difference between a macchiato and anaffogato, local traders say.

The US giant announced last week that it would close 61 of its 84Australian outlets by Sunday, saying "challenges unique to theAustralian market" were behind the decision, which cost almost 700jobs.

The statement from Starbucks' head office in Seattle did not saywhat made Australia different, but did point out: "There are noother international markets that need to be addressed in thismanner."

Starbucks Asia Pacific president John Culver was more forthcomingabout why the company was on the retreat in Australia, eight yearsafter opening its first store in Sydney.

"I think what we've seen is that Australia has a very sophisticatedcoffee culture," he said in a newspaper interview.

A wave of post-war immigrants from Turkey, Greece and particularlyItaly means that for decades Australians had been enjoying the"coffee experience" Starbucks virtually created from scratch in theUnited States.

Both Sydney and Melbourne have Italian enclaves lined with cafeswhere old men sip espressos at outdoor tables through the day andtrendy young couples gather in the evening for a caffeine fix.

Starbucks' idea of making itself a "third place" in customers'lives between home and work was a novelty in the United States, where in many small towns cafe culture consisted of filter coffeeon a hot plate.

But Melbourne cafe owner Jeremy Jenkins said the situation wasdifferent in Australia, where baristas have been plying their tradeat steaming espresso machines since the 1950s.

"People come in our cafe because they know us and they know they'llget good coffee, we're part of the local community," Jenkins toldAFP.

"Starbucks is a McDonald's coffee experience. It's not about thequality of the coffee, it's about convenience and location."

Starbucks also closed 600 stores in the United States early lastmonth in a move widely seen as a response to belt-tightening amongcustomers less inclined to spend money on luxuries like coffee intough economic times.

Commentators have suggested similar problems hit Starbucks inAustralia, but the queues outside the Met Cafe in central Sydney ona recent windy winter's day indicated many customers were not yetready to sacrifice their coffee hit.

Met Cafe owner Brendan Smart said Starbucks had expanded tooquickly in Australia.

"A few years ago there weren't that many of them and they seemed tobe going OK, but then all of a sudden, they were everywhere," hetold AFP.

"Some city blocks had three Starbucks on them -- it's crazy."

Smart said many customers had told him they did not want to buytheir coffee from a corporate giant and those who had triedStarbucks were not impressed by the product, saying it did notcompare with the numerous local brews available.

"What we do isn't rocket science, I'm the first to admit that, butyou've got to have a passion for coffee that involves everythingfrom grinding the beans to operating the machine," he said.

"You go into Starbucks and it's full of teenagers behind thecounter. I'd question whether they have that passion."

Starbucks now plans to streamline its operation to 23 stores inAustralia's largest cities Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

City Votes To 'Grandfather In' Giant American Flag In Leesburg

LEESBURG, Fla. --

Leesburg residents were protesting a move Monday that could bringdown a giant American flag, but the city council decided to instead'grandfather in' the flag.

SLIDESHOW:

Images Of 30-Foot By 60-Foot American Flag

VOTE:Agree With Decision To Let Giant Flag Keep Flying?

VIDEO REPORT:

Giant American Flag Gets To Keep Flying

The city said the flag is too big, but others call it a citylandmark. The city commission decided to make an exception Mondayto their own rules to keep the flag flying. They were facing alarge crowd of people who are at Monday night's meeting to stand upfor the stars and stripes and found a way to avoid any controversy.

If you drive Highway 441 through Leesburg, you can't miss it. It'sone of the largest, if not the largest, American flags in all ofCentral Florida and it flies over a car dealership.

Greg Clark says it's a tradition, not a trademark. Clark and mosteveryone else who crowded Monday's Leesburg city commission meetingbelieve an ordinance to limit the size of U.S. flags and polesshould be repealed.

The ordinance was originally passed in 2004, along with a new setof rules for signs in Leesburg's business districts. Some considerlarge signs an ugly sight and the city set deadlines for theirremoval, the first wave to hit next January. But because of theenormous cost involved and with some businesses struggling in tougheconomic times, city leaders might consider extending the deadlineanother two years.

As for the 30-foot-by-60-foot star spangled banner, the cityavoided a likely fight if they tried to bring it down. Members ofthe city council that Eyewitness News talked to Monday had saidthey thought patriotism would win out.

The car dealership was annexed into the city of Leesburg in 2006,but the flag has flown since 1987. For that reason, some believethe flag should be grandfathered in and allowed to remain flying.

Western Mass. Flag Football League season set to open

Western Mass. Flag Football League season set to open

What do former local high school standouts do when their playingdays are over?

Many of them take to the field in the Western Mass. Flag FootballLeague, which begins its 11th season Friday with two night games atHolyoke High School.

"It's a range from 18 to guys who are 36, 37 years of age," saidChad Gibson of Chicopee, the league's commissioner andsingle-season sack leader. "The majority of high school standoutsfrom the past 15 years have all played in the league."

The 11-team WMFFL plays a 13-game regular season over 15 weeks. Thefirst four weeks and the playoffs are held at Holyoke High School, with the remaining games at Van Horn Park in Springfield. When playshifts to Van Horn, two games are held simultaneously on Saturdaysat 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Gibson, who is in his sixth season as commissioner, hopes to take agroup of all-stars to a World Cup qualifying event, sponsored byflagmag.com, a leading resource on flag football.

The league plays 8-on-8, using NCAA rules. The sidelines areconsidered live, which leads to some pretty spirited tackling thatborders on full contact. High school and college officials call thegames.

"I anticipate in probably five years, my main goal is to have thisleague with approximately 20 to 24 teams," Gibson said.

The 2008 WMFFL campaign begins with a rematch of last November'sSuper Bowl, as Gibson's Maximum Capacity Bears open defense oftheir championship against the No Fear Falcons. The Bears arearguably the league's elite team, having won the last two SuperBowls and four of the eight individual postseason awards in 2007.

Gibson and top defensive back Nate Mercier anchor the defense, while the combination of reigning MVP K.J. Walsh at quarterback andreceiver Juni Delgado give the Bears offensive firepower. Otherelite quarterbacks in the league include the Falcons' RichieSantiago, the Eagles' John Frasco and the Redskins' Tim Klett.

Waving the flag on Iraq -- now in rerun!

Waving the flag on Iraq -- now in rerun!

Waving the flag on Iraq -- now in rerun! It's hard to predict how Obama's trip will play out with voters inNovember. But McCain has obviously decided that whatever flashystunts Obama pulls off, his own best strategy is to stay on message-- and that means turning the Iraq lemon into lemonade. The war maybe hugely unpopular, warmonger-in-chief Bush's approval rating maybe approaching Vlad the Impaler's -- no matter! Attack! The bestdefense is a good offense! Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

It's an audacious strategy, and it could prove to be disastrous.Pickett's charge did not succeed for the Confederacy at Gettysburg. But it's right out of the Karl Rove playbook -- and if recenthistory has taught us anything, it's never to underestimate KarlRove.

Rove, and his star pupil Bush, perfected a political tacticreminiscent of the old Green Bay Packer power sweep: Everyone knowsit's coming, but they still can't stop it. And McCain is too smartnot to stay with a proven winner -- especially because he doesn'thave any choice.

The Rove play is based on three things: wrapping yourself in theflag, never admitting you're wrong, and impugning your opponent. These three tactics have one thing in common: They are aimed at thelowest common denominator of the American people. Under normalcircumstances, they have only limited effectiveness. But when thenation is at war, they are extremely potent -- as John Kerry andthe Democrats found out in 2004. And McCain is going to use themand use them and use them.

McCain's repeated claims that we are succeeding in Iraq and muststay the course to final "victory," and his attacks on Obama, aretextbook examples of the Rove-Bush-GOP tactic. Take the

recent speech

in which McCain attacked Obama for not supporting the "surge." "IfSen. Obama had prevailed, American forces would have had to retreatunder fire. The Iraqi army would have collapsed. Civiliancasualties would have increased dramatically," McCain intoned."Al-Qaida would have killed the Sunni sheikhs who had begun tocooperate with us, and the 'Sunni Awakening' would have beenstrangled at birth. Al-Qaida fighters would have safe havens, fromwhere they could train Iraqis and foreigners and turn Iraq into abase for launching attacks on Americans elsewhere. Civil war, genocide and wider conflict would have been likely."

McCain then went on to sketch an even more apocalyptic vision ofwhat would have happened if America had been led by the weak andtraitorous Obama instead of the brave and resolute Bush:

Breaking The Metal Mold

Breaking The Metal Mold

At first, the company used the alloy to manufacture products forthe restaurant industry.

It wasn't until the early to mid-'70s that we started selling it atthe retail level, Lefever said.

Wilton Armetale now makes about 700 different cookware andserveware products, Lefever said, turning out about 700,000 items ayear with a work force of 80 to 85 employees and sales runningbetween $15 million and $20 million.

We are the largest manufacturer and supplier of alternative metalin the country, Lefever said. We call ourselves the last manstanding' ... in an industry where made in the USA still meanssomething.

But to grow, he said, the company had to break with that tradition,a decision that Lefever said has not always set well with all itscustomers.

The new lines of glassware and ceramics are not Wilton Armetale'sfirst forays into outsourcing. They're part of a process ofmodernization that began several years ago.

One of the first steps the company took to ensure its future was toinvest about $4 million in new equipment in 1999 and 2000 to makeits Mount Joy foundry operations more efficient and environmentallyfriendly.

Expanding its brand beyond metal was another step in the process.

For us to continue to grow our business, we realized we had tobranch off into other media, Lefever said. The reason we import theglassware and ceramics is we don't have the expertise to do thatourselves.

Importing is also a step that most of Wilton Armetale's competitors- Arthur Court, Mariposa, Namb and Lenox - took some time ago.

We have to constantly reinvent ourselves when we're in an industryas competitive as this, Lefever said.

The company began exploring the idea of outsourcing around 2005,Lefever said, approaching several of its major customers, such asMacy's, to see if there would be a market for cheaper, mass-produced versions of some of the company's original metal breadtrays.

Finding the right supplier in China took about 18 months.

The challenge, Lefever said, was to find an environmentallyfriendly manufacturer that treated its workers right. And it alsohad to be someone who could be entrusted with the formula for theArmetale alloy.

He credits Ivan Jeffery, president of Crescent Brass in Reading anda longtime friend of Fred Wilton, with helping the company find theright supplier.

It's not that difficult to do business in China, Jeffery said, although the idea scares people at first.

Crescent is similar to Wilton Armetale in being a century-oldfoundry that still pours its own metal castings, Jeffery said.

But unlike Wilton, Crescent Brass has been outsourcing some of itsproducts for a long time.

We started in Taiwan and Italy 25 years ago, Jeffery said. We'vebeen in China about 10 years and have developed relationships justlike you would doing business in this country.

Lefever said he and Fred Wilton flew to China and spent more than aweek there visiting with the company's owner.

\It's been a very good relationship, Lefever said. He's an honestbusinessman who has never breached the issue of confidentiality. We've never seen any of our products show up anywhere else.

\It also turned out to be a profitable relationship.

\That first year, we sold 250,000 units, Lefever said.

\But the outsourcing was a big change for our customers, Lefeversaid.

\The company wholesales its products to nearly every departmentstore in the country, along with about 1,800 independent andspecialty shops across the U.S. and Canada.

\Some of them were upset, Lefever explained, and were saying Wiltonis selling out by importing some of its products from China.

That has begun to change, he said, as they've recognized that thequality is not any different from the products made here. And thathas helped pave the way for the company to leverage its well-knownbrand with imported glassware and ceramics.

Jeffery also helped Wilton Armetale find its ceramics supplier. Inaddition to Crescent Brass, he runs a company with a partner inmainland China - Total Source Trading - that imports a variety offinished products and has contacts with a broad range ofindustries.

The ceramics supplier, like the metal supplier, is in GuangdongProvince, in southern China.

Wilton Armetale's connection with its glassware supplier in Mexicois a different story.

Lefever said that relationship grew out of a tour of factories heand Fred Wilton made independent of Jeffery.

During their travels, one of the metal suppliers they were visitingin Guadalajara happened to mention that he also had a factory thatmakes hand-blown glass, Lefever said.

That company, Hacienda Real, is now producing Wilton Armetale's newline of Bello Vaso glassware.

Wilton already has a stock of the glassware at its 80,000-square-foot distribution warehouse on Stony Battery Road, and it hopes tostart shipping its new line of ceramics around Oct. 1, at thebeginning of the busy holiday gift season.

Our goal, over the next three years, is to try to do $1 million ineach product line, Lefever said.

The company had the same goal when it came out with its locallymade Gourmet Grillware a couple of years ago, a line sold throughsuch outlets as Home Depot that is now bringing in $600,000 to$700,000 a year.

That will always be made here, Lefever said. We believe there'salways going to be an advantage to make some of our productsdomestically.

Popular Bedroom, bathroom glassware

Popular Bedroom, bathroom glassware

All these assumptions are certainly reasonable and cover some ofthe most likely scenarios. Most vintage glassware, depression orotherwise, comprises items to be used in the dining room orkitchen.

But another avidly sought type of depression glass may have youheaded elsewhere in the house. Items termed bedroom and bathroom glassware are a popular collectible category encompassingdecorative pieces as well as those used for personal grooming. Hereare some of the objects collectors look for.

Lamps

Although lamps are certainly not limited to the bedside table, thatis what many depression era glass lamps were made for. With bothglass bases and glass shades, many of these lamps haven't survivedthe years intact and unscathed, but those that have are much indemand by collectors. Bedside lamps often have figural bases -well-dressed ladies and Scotty dogs are two examples of popularthemes used. Lamps may be clear, coloured or frosted glass. Theymay also have fired-on colour or painted details.

Perfume and Cologne Bottles

Old perfume bottles make up a popular collecting category all theirown, but there is a distinct elegance to those from the depressionera. Plain, patterned, or art deco in style, perfumes and colognesoffer a huge selection to collectors. Some seek single bottles, while others look for matched vanity sets consisting of two or morebottles, a powder jar and sometimes a glass tray. A range ofcoloured glass bottles from amber to cobalt blue can be found. Onecommon collector concern is the difficulty in finding intact glassstoppers for the bottles though, as they were so often damaged orbroken.

Powder Jars

Made to hold facial or body powder, depression era powder jarsoften capture the imagination of collectors who appreciate whimsy. Many jars are either embellished with a figure as a knob on top ofthe cover, or the whole container itself may be figural. Somecommon themes include well-dressed ladies and animals. Non-figuraljars may be patterned or plain. Examples can be found in manycolours in both clear and frosted glass. Some collectors acceptminor wear and roughness on interior cover edges, which is to beexpected from years of moving a lid on and off.

Other Items

For the bedroom, some other collectible items include glass clocks, and guest or night sets consisting of a water pitcher and glass orglasses. For the bathroom, various toiletry jars and containers, soap dishes and even glass towel bars can be found. As with alldepression glass, collectors want pieces in the best conditionpossible without chips or damage.

So whether enjoying someone else's collection of depression glassor perhaps thinking of starting your own, remember this lovelyglassware doesn't have to be restricted to the china cabinet.

Kodak, CVS partner on photo album printing kiosks

Kodak, CVS partner on photo album printing kiosks

Forget printing photos: Kodak's latest drugstore kiosk can nowcreate entire bound photo albums in a matter of minutes.

According to a story reported on the business journal

StreetInsider.com, new Kodak photo kiosks being rolled out to CVS/pharmacydrugstores nationwide allow you to create customized hard-coverphoto books while you wait.

Details on how the new kiosks work, how long the process takes, orwhat customization options are available are sketchy, but accordingto a

related press release, users who hold one of CVS/pharmacy's ExtraCare shopper cards willbe reimbursed for the cost of one photo book created through July19.

Overall, the Kodak kiosks seem like an interesting approach towhat's traditionally been an online purchase (through sites likeSnapfish.com and MPIX.com), and the promotion is a greatopportunity to check out the results without laying downhard-earned cash to do it.

The latest kiosks, which should be up and running at 4,500CVS/pharmacy stores by the time of this writing, also allow usersto create photo slideshows (complete with music and video effects)and instantly burn them to DVD for home playback. For all thedetails on the new kiosks, head over to StreetInsider.com.

UPDATE: Kodak's PR folks were able to provide clarification on howthe album binding system works. The same photo printing kiosks thathave been in place before are actually used for the system, onlythey're now set up to assist users in laying out and printing albumpages from a selection of templates.

Users build and print their book page layouts using their photosand the kiosk's templates and then print them. The printed pagesare then bound into book form "behind the counter" by aCVS/pharmacy employee, rather than within the kiosk itself.

Kitchen glassware bowl mixes up some dough

Kitchen glassware bowl mixes up some dough

Q:The primary colored mixing bowl set in this photo was a weddinggift in 1963. Even though I have used the set over the past 45years, it is in excellent condition. Each bowl is marked with an"R" in a circle and the words "Trademark -- Pyrex -- Made in U.S.A.-- Ovenware." And each bowl contains a number and the amount ofliquid it holds. The yellow bowl is numbered "404 -- 4 qt.," "403-- 2 1/2 qt." is on the green one, "402 -- 1 1/4 qt." is on thered, and "401 -- 1 1/2 pt." is on the blue bowl.My daughter told me she has seen sets like mine in antiques shops, and I now am curious what my set is worth.A:

Pyrex kitchen glassware was introduced in 1915 by the CorningGlass Co. in Corning, N.Y. Corning employee, Dr. Jesse T.Littleton, discovered that Nonex, a low expansive glass, could makea heat resistant casserole. After successfully testing theovenware, Corning introduced their first pie plate. Some believe the name evolved from "pie" and "ex" the ending ofNonex, thus the name "Pyrex." Over the years they have produced amyriad of ovenware pieces. Your mixing bowl set would probablyfetch $50 to $60 in an antiques shop.Q:

This mark is on the bottom of my pottery jardiniere. Thejardiniere has a matching pedestal, but it is not marked. Theoverall height is approximately 25 inches. It has a glossy greenglaze and is in good condition. The set was in a home we purchasedin Florida. We know it survived two Florida hurricanes, but otherthan that, we don’t know much about its history and value.

Thanks for any information you can provide.A:

McCoy Pottery was made in Roseville, Ohio, from 1910 to 1990. Yourjardiniere and pedestal were made around 1955. The set wasavailable in green, matte white, and a brown and green blend.

Its value would probably be $300 to $400.

Q: I have a clear, pressed glass pedestal vase that I bought in anantiques shop. I was told it is a double vase with the "AmazonSawtooth" pattern. It stands 9 inches tall and is in mintcondition. I could not find a manufacturer’s mark.

Any information about its maker, when it was made, and its valuewill be appreciated.

A:You have a double bud vase in the "Amazon" pattern. It is anexample of Victorian non-flint glass -- the design is also known as"Sawtooth" and "Sawtooth Band." Bryce Bros. located in Pittsburgh, produced the pattern from around 1890 to 1891, and United StatesGlass Co. in Pittsburgh reissued the pattern from 1891 to 1904.

"Amazon" was available in clear, amber, canary-yellow, amethyst, blue and ruby-stained clear. Both glassmakers produced the patternin a myriad of pieces and it has not been reproduced.

The value of your double bud vase would probably be $75 to $125.

Q: I have a 1933 World’s Fair silver ring. On the black enameltop are the words "1933 -- A Century of Progress -- Chicago." It isin excellent condition.

Is it collectible and what is it worth?

A: Mementos and souvenirs from any of the World’s Fairs arecollectible. Your ring would probably be worth $100 to $125.

Cosmopolitan taste treat

Cosmopolitan taste treat

Between shows in Melbourne there is a feast of great eating. Andwith food from every culture from the Italian postwarimmigrants to the most recent surge of Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese there's a dish for every palate.

Beyond the food itself is a level of service New Zealanders arejust not used to: in The Press Club on Flinders St, our group ofsix was welcomed by a hugely competent maitre d, a professionalsommelier who knew our orders and recommended great wines to match, three waitresses and two waiters. And each knew who was havingwhat, and when.

It's a dining experience hard to find in Wellington, and if the newgovernment wants to do our tourism industry a favour come November,it could do worse than send the whole sector to Melbourne to findout what good service really is.

The competence, knowledge and casually professional service isepitomised at MoVida, a Spanish tapas 100-seat restaurant on HosierLane that is so popular it has had to open next door.

Spanish-born, Australian-raised Frank Camorra's combinations ofsalty flavours – anchovies with roast tomato sorbet, forinstance – are exciting and challenging.

With "tapa" – individual pieces at about NZ$5 and"racion", entree-sized portions at $7-$10, it's possibleto cover the taste spectrum in a succession of small bites, complemented by white linen napkins, fine glassware, and thevelvety flavour- packed wines of Spain.

The Press Club is the flagship of chef George Colombaris –the Good Food Guide's chef of the year – and offerstraditional Greek food with very modern twists: cumin-roastedbeetroot, pistachio biscuit, yoghurt cheese and honey; black musselspanakopita, warm vinaigrette of white anchovies and chickpeas.

The roast cuts and exquisite desserts are just as interesting.

Straight-up modern Melburnian food is served at Gills Diner, offLittle Collins St, one shop up from the bakery that supplies allits bread and pastry.

The warehouse-schoolroom tiled-wall space has shared refectorytables, an efficient clatter, and French-Italian blackboard mealsserved with local beer and wine in serious glassware.

The vibe, and the music, are managed by Lazlo Evenhuis and histurntable, amp and timber speakers, and the warmth of theatmosphere shows off the tastes of the earthy, slow-cooked,market-fresh food.

George Farmer looks at Aqua Essentials nano filter and glassware.

home   reviews   first sight reviews  articleEden 501 external filter and nano glassware

George Farmer looks at Aqua Essentials" nano filter andglassware.

Copyright © Practical FishkeepingEden 501 external filterThe Eden 501 external filter is suitable for tank up to 60 litres. It measures just 16 x 15 x 9cm and has a flow rating of 300lph. Itcomes complete with all necessary fittings including spray bar, sponge and ceramic mechanical and biological media.

The hose sizes are 9/12mm (9mm internal diameter, 12mm externaldiameter). Build quality feels good and the instructions are fairlyeasy to follow. One downside is the filter must be placed at thesame level as the aquarium, presumably because the 5w pump is tooweak to circulate water against a height.Priming is a basic affair with a removable cap used to manuallyfill with water.

Price 37.99.Glass filter nano inlet/outletAvailable separately but complementing the external filter in thenano tank, are the glass filter nano inlet and outlet. Being glass, they make subtle additions to the aquarium and do not spoil theview of the aquascape.

Somewhat surprisingly the outlet fits a 9mm external diameter hoseand the inlet fits a 12mm external diameter hose. For this reasonit is necessary to use some form of adaptation if using the Eden501 filter with its two 9mm fittings, or a larger filter with 12mmfittings.

The glassware is constructed to a high level of craftsmanship, although I do recommend being very careful when removing filterhosing for cleaning, as all glass is brittle and breaks with roughhandling! The glassware simply hooks over the aquarium glass. Nosuction caps/clips are provided but they should not be necessary.

Nano mini glass diffuser

The new nano mini glass diffuser is a stylish design that fits onto the inside of the aquarium by hooking over the tank glass in thesame way as the nano filter inlet and outlet.

It is designed for a max. glass thickness of 4mm. It has a 20mmceramic disc that emits a fine stream of CO2 microbubbles. Itsdimensions make it more useful for shallower aquariums with amaximum height of 25cm.

Price 39.99.

How to Lose a Sofa in 10 days

How to Lose a Sofa in 10 days

How to Lose a Sofa in 10 days By Nedra Rhone | Wednesday, July 16, 2008, 10:03 AM

The Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionIn keeping with yesterday’s theme, here’s Keep, Spruceor Pitch, Part III’ve lived in every region of the country and at some pointin move, I’ve had to shed furniture. In Chicago and LA, getting rid of unwanted furniture was all aboutthe yard sale…and when that failed, you called Goodwill,Salvi or some such, to come cart the stuff away.

In New York, my first moving sale involved hanging five signs on acollege campus. About 2 hours later, the apartment was empty. Formy second NY “sale,” I left a lamp and table on thecurb and watched as two dudes stopped, examined and strolled offdown the street with my discarded items.

Here in Atlanta, I need to lose a sofa, and I’m not sure ofthe best way to do it.

I don’t have a yard, so that kills the yard sale. Craigslistseems a popular choice or ajc.com classifieds. And yesterday, aftervisiting

Finders Keepers, a furniture consignment store, I thought maybe I should give thata try.

How do you get rid of furniture that you no longer want, but thatyou consider too valuable for a curbside donation?

Defence Minister says SOFA talks with US may end in autumn

The Czech-U.S. negotiations on the SOFAtreaty, which is to complement the main treaty on a U.S. radar baseon Czech soil and which deals with U.S. soldiers' status in theCzech Republic, may be closed only in autumn, Czech DefenceMinister Vlasta Parkanova said on Wednesday.

She was speaking to Czech journalists after meeting her U.S.counterpart Robert Gates in Washington.

Previously, rumours emerged that the two states could sign the SOFAtreaty during Parkanova's U.S. visit.

Gates reportedly assured Parkanova that Washington will continuepromoting its missile defence system irrespective of who becomesthe next U.S. president.

"The USA, whoever its head may be, will continue operating inEurope and remain interested in the development of anti-missiledefence," Parkanova said.

The Czech Republic and the USA have negotiated about the radarbase, a part of the U.S. planned missile shield in Europe to besituated in the Czech military district Brdy, 90km southwest ofPrague, for more than a year.

The main treaty in this respect was signed by the two countries'foreign ministers, Karel Schwarzenberg and Condoleezza Rice, inPrage on July 8.

Feel like being a sex machine? Bid for a James Brown jumpsuit

Make way, the Godfather of Soul will be in the house today.Clarification: the house is Christie's in New York, while the man,James Brown, is no longer with us. But be ready for the grand saleof some 350 items of the late, great soul singer's memorabilia, from a sofa (in green vinyl) to hair curlers.

It is an event that will attract everyone from museum curators tofans still crushed by the loss of one of the most colourful –if troubled – musical figures of late 20th century. If thejumpsuit worn by Brown in 1974 in the concert before theAli-Foreman Rumble in the Jungle boxing showdown in Zaire is beyondyour wallet, consider perhaps bidding for a sepia picture of himtaken when he was nine (Estimated price: $500 (£250).)

A judge ordered the sale of Brown's private possessions lastFebruary to help his estate pay off debts. But even until the lastminute, Christie's were not sure it would happen thanks to thecontinuing court wrangles between the trustees of the Brown estateand two of his former managers. Then on Monday an appeals judge inSouth Carolina, where the singer maintained a mansion, said theauction could proceed.

Brown died on Christmas Day 2006 aged 73, robbing the music worldof a giant whose hit songs included "Sex Machine", "Papa's Got aBrand New Bag", "Say it Loud – I'm Black and I'm

Proud" and "Living in America". The Grammy for that last song, recorded in 1986, is among the lots today.

But, just as his private life was marked by turmoil, includingrun-ins with the taxman and multiple wives, so in death Brown'saffairs have triggered fraught probate battles. His will named sixchildren as heirs. But two former managers, Albert Dallas andAlfred Bradley, are contesting the authority of trustees overseeingthe singer's 62-acre home in Beech Island, South Carolina, whichsome family members want to see converted into a tourist attractionsimilar to Graceland, the former Elvis Presley home, in Memphis.

Christie's expects the sale to fetch as much as £1m. Asidefrom assorted performance jumpsuits, some with SEX embroideredacross the midriff, highlighted lots include the round, vinyl sofaand, of course, the hair curling set, which includes 80 rollers, picks, combs and numerous cans of lotion. Also in the catalogue area Hammond B-3 electric organ and a black cape embroidered with hisname.

Czech Daily Says USA Makes Counterproposal on Tax in SOFA Ra...

Czech Daily Says USA Makes Counterproposal on Tax in SOFA Radar ...

Text of report by Czech privately-owned independent centre-leftnewspaper Pravo website,

Defence Minister Vlasta Parkanova will today begin a five-dayofficial visit to the United States with planned talks withPentagon head Robert Gates.

According to Pravo's information, just two days before herdeparture from Prague today, after several weeks of lack ofprogress, the United States has come up with a counterproposal onthe disputed question of taxes for the American personnel at theradar station, which dispute has been preventing the completion ofthe second radar agreement (SOFA [Status of Forces Agreement]),which sets the rules for the presence of American troops in theCzech Republic.

Although this document is within the competence of the DefenceMinistry, the issue of taxation is being negotiated for the CzechRepublic by the Finance Ministry. So far Prague has been insistingthat the Americans at the radar in Brdy should pay tax in the CzechRepublic, a proposal which the United States rejects.

Yesterday Jan Pejsek of the Defence Ministry press section toldPravo that the ministry had not received any proposal. "We do noteven have any information that a proposal has been received," hesaid. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Gates will put forwardthe proposal to Parkanova. In any case the American counterproposalhas extinguished any hope of the defence ministers signing the SOFAagreement today at the Pentagon.

Parkanova and Gates will discuss the state of the missile defenceproject and also the turbulent situation in Afghanistan, where theCzech Republic is taking part in NATO's ISAF mission.

Buzz Quiz TV - PS3 review

Buzz Quiz TV - PS3 review

Full Review

Buzz on the PS2 was Sony's attempt at creating a game franchisethat used dedicated controls way before the Nintendo Wii was on thescene. So can the new PS3 version build on the fun of the PS2titles? We put our finger on the buzzer to find out.

Still using the same four Buzz controllers, although you can nowget wireless options so your living room isn't covered in aspaghetti of cables, the concept if you haven't heard of Buzz untilnow, is simple: four players, four controllers, four colouredbuttons and one big buzzer each.

You then answer a series of questions based around a set subjectplaying games like stop the clock or pass the bomb. It's all goodfun and one, guaranteed you have a bunch of mates to play with, worth investing in.

The catch, of course, was if you didn't have a bunch of mates oryou'd played it enough that you knew all the answers.

In steps the PS3 version and while the graphics and gameplay hasn'treally changed, the big addition is the online gaming modes. Signin to the PlayStation Network and you're offered the chance tochallenge other gamers around the world in Sofa vs. Sofa mode ormerely download questions that you or other people have uploaded.Want to test your prowess on questions based on the original DieHard movie? No problem, what about a bevy of Trick Questions? You'll find those too.

Where the real fun comes in is showing your vast knowledge in theSofa vs. Sofa mode. Frustratingly you can only play one player inthis option rather than your whole family against another somewhereon the other side of the planet, but its still worth the effort.

Subject areas range from "Movies" to "Body andSoul" and beyond and all the questions are of averagedifficulty if you have half a brain.

Playing online we found the experience easy and enjoyable. Joininga game is as simple as pressing a couple of buttons (mainly tochoose your character) and like the offline version the person inlast place gets to choose the subject so they've got a chance toclaw their way back into the game. Games are based over threelevels and it's a shame you can't have more control over which typeof game or the length of game you play when online.

Questions are varied, however not as varied as we might have liked(we got the same ones a couple of times) and because you are giventhe answer even if you are wrong you'll soon learn which button topress when they come around again.

There are of course league tables to rank yourself in and gloat, orcringe, according.

VERDICT

One of the disadvantages of a quiz game is that if you play itenough you'll eventually know all the answers. Here you can getaround that problem by buying or downloading more questions eitherfrom the PlayStation Network or just randoms looking to challengepeople and that's before you start playing online to show them howclever you really are.

So has the PS3 version worked?

Of course it has. Sony has managed to create a game that works withfriends after a dinner party as well as when your home alonelooking to test your knowledge rather than kill yet another zombie.

E3: Xbox 360 Live - Sit down on Microsoft virtual sofa

Photo: Microsoft

You’ll never be alone again when you dive into virtualuniverses, as

Microsoft plans the global TV sofa, a new entertainment medium connectingpeople and their cyber alter ego worldwide. That’s at leastMicrosoft’s vision and they spread the news at the gamespectacle E3 in Los Angeles. In the centre of action is the

Xbox 360, that soon will be upgraded to 60 Gb. Within Microsoft’sonline network every user gets an avatar, its own alter geo as itis known from Second Life or Nintendo’s Wii concept.

The idea’s core is to assemble those avatars and their humancounterparts on a virtual and comfortable sofa lounge to consumemovies, play

video games and other entertainment media. It may work out well when smallgroups meet each other to arrange a quick online game session. Thisadvanced virtual reality can be of interest in live gaming shows, when classic TV concepts are transferred into an online arena.Microsoft has announced a cooperation with Endemol to push itsonline offensive. This service features a 1 vs. 100 version ofEndemol’s famous quiz show.

On the other side, the new Guitar Hero World Tour probably won’t turn you into a couch potato. The virtual andwireless instruments developed by Neversoft will feature an Xboxspecific track pack by R.E.M. Xbox live users also can downloadMetallica’s album Death Magnetic and develop theirinstrumental skills. Its debut is expected to be in November laterthis year.

With an redesigned Xbox Live users can enjoy a new party systemthat may prove its merits particularly on rainy days. Up to eightpeople can catch up online to chat, share photos and movies andplay games. Right now it’s still a US based service and thereis unfortunately no current word for a UK spin-off.

Microsoft also revealed a real Coup at yesterday’s pressconference in Los Angeles. Final Fantasy XIII, an exclusiveblockbuster for PS3 gamers, is not limited to

PS3 anymore. The game will be released simultaneously for both PS3 andXBox 360 in the US and Europe.

Cost Of Living: Made-to-order sofas

Cost Of Living: Made-to-order sofas

In an episode of Friends, the group attempt to carry Ross's newsofa up the stairs to his apartment and get stuck. Sitcomsthe world over are littered with such furniture moving-inspiredcalamities and most homeowners can offer similar tales of theseuncompromising beasts.

The problem of importing one into your home is, however, the leastof your worries. Finding one is a loathsome task – traipsingfrom store to store, because you can't tell what they feel like ina catalogue, matching colours and measuring each one, only todiscover a friend has the same piece, and they bought theirs in thesales.

Imagine the annoyance felt on encountering someone dressed in anidentical piece of clothing and multiply it by a thousand –because that's likely to represent the difference in cost –and you may have some idea of how infuriating it can be.

A made-to-order sofa is therefore an enticing prospect andfortunately there are companies who will design one to match a roomin size, colour and style.

The standard practice is to send in your preferred dimensions andmaterials, some companies will even provide interior designers totake measurements and offer advice, and they will build it.

Bespoke sofa specialist, John Alan Designs, sends out a cataloguecontaining different fabrics to choose from but will also use anyfabrics you already have, providing they meet fire and safetyregulations. The wooden frame, though usually beech, can be made ofany wood as long as it's available, and they will match the finishto your flooring or other furniture.

A two- to three-person sofa costs in the region of £2,000 andtakes around eight weeks to make, once you have decided on yourfabric fabric. If it seems expensive, remember these sofas are notmerely about aesthetics, they are going to be far more comfortablethan the mass-produced variety.

The company has also recently designed a sofa with detachable backand arms – making it easy to negotiate awkward staircases andhallways.

What it costs:

A two- to three-person sofa (including all material and labour)costs £2,000 to £3,000.

Spice-Rack Favorites Battle E. Coli And Other Foodborne Path...

Spice-Rack Favorites Battle E. Coli And Other Foodborne Pathogens

Spice-Rack Favorites Battle E. Coli And Other Foodborne Pathogens

That's according to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) chemistMendel Friedman, who several years ago evaluated thebacteria-bashing power of these and dozens of other plantcompounds.

Now, some of the compounds that Friedman and co-investigatorsdetermined were the strongest combatants of E. coli, Salmonellaenterica, Campylobacter jejuni, or Listeria monocytogenes in the2002 study are being tapped for new research focused on foodsafety.

For example, Friedman, research leader Tara H. McHugh, and otherscientists at the ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany,Calif., are evaluating the highest-ranking botanical bactericidesas potential ingredients in what are known as edible films.

A thin, pliable, edible film for the future might be made ofpuréed spinach spiked with carvacrol, the compoundresponsible for oregano's ranking as a top fighter of E. coli inthe Friedman study.

The scientists want to find out whether adding small squares ofcarvacrol-enhanced spinach purée film to bags of chilled,ready-to-eat spinach leaves would help protect this salad greenagainst E. coli.

Friedman is also exploring other new uses of the top-ratedbotanicals from the earlier study. That investigation, which heconducted with technician Philip R. Henika and research leaderRobert E. Mandrell at Albany, was the most extensive of its kind atthe time it was published. Also notable was the common basis ofcomparison, which the team established by inventing new methods toprepare and test all of the samples. For even more consistency, thescientists used the same bacterial strains—from the samesuppliers—throughout the investigation.

Let's Spice-up the 2008 Election, Iron Chef-Style

Let's Spice-up the 2008 Election, Iron Chef-Style

Let's Spice-up the 2008 Election, Iron Chef-Style

That answer? Iron Chef America .

For those unfamiliar with this Food Network show, Iron Chef America features a culinary showdown between a challenger (a chef fromsome renowned restaurant) and a resident Iron Chef (a pantheon ofFood Network personalities and/or restaurant owners.) Each chef andtheir kitchen staff have 60 minutes to make five dishes using asecret ingredient that is revealed at the start of the show. (Thesecret ingredient can be anything, from blue foot chickens torhubarb to oysters.) Each chef can use other items in their dishes, but each dish has to highlight the characteristics of the secretingredient.

Iron Chef America is not a standard kitchen tutorial. With only 60 minutes to cook, chefs must choose creatively but carefully, a balancing act thatconsiders the range of dishes that feature the main ingredient, thestaff’s ability to execute their leader’s ambitions, and the balance of flavors that will impress the palettes of thethree expert or celebrity judges.

Wouldn’t that be a great way to see how McCain and Obamareally work? The show wouldn’t replace the election, it wouldreplace the debates, offering genuine insights into theirpersonalities with an hour of improvised banter rather thanrehearsed answers to obvious and anticipated questions. Anyone whohas ever cooked with a group of people knows that conversationsmeander wildly in the kitchen, minds half-engaged in banter andequally focused on chopping mirepoix . Anecdotes shared spark other’s memories, and people usuallyreveal themselves without guard, without artifice. Think of anyhouse party you’ve attended—the most interestingconversations are invariably occurring in the kitchen, even ifthere isn’t anything on the stove. Kitchens are comforting.Kitchens make us feel at home.

For Iron Chef Oval Office (the show would obviously require such a name change, if only foravid readers of TV Guide ) the candidates’ sous chefs and prep cooks would be actualcampaign staffers. (Emeril Lagasse would not be allowed on a team, even if he’s working part-time as a campaign canvasser.) Thiswill allow the viewers to see the teams in action, under pressure,in direct competition. Judges could be chosen from the nationalpress corps—perhaps Chris Matthews from Fox News, Lou Dobbsfrom CNN and Charlie Rose from NPR—but the on-air judgingwould be a formality, just as the post-debate wrap-up by punditssheds no additional light on the preceding debate. Americanswatching at home would be the true judges.

I’m sure fans of the traditional, staged, stodgy debates willoppose this bold meld of popular culture and politics. One sidewill assert that their candidate would do better in an oratoryformat, concerned that America will be suspicious of even the mostdelicious couscous (“See, that’s why he makes menervous—what does he have against rice?”) while theother side will worry that the differences in their politicalexperience will not be properly demonstrated by theircandidate’s centerpiece of Jello salad. (“Just becausethey serve it in nursing homes doesn’t mean he’sold.”)

But we need a new way to engage the voters, and more of the sameisn’t going to do it . YouTube isn’t going to be the solution, because debate producerssimply pick the same video questions that they would have had amoderator ask, or worse, try to get laughs by including a questionfrom this year’s political version of William Hung; MySpace won’t be the answer because too many young men want to be“friends” with Barack in hopes of scoring points withthe young women who support Barack; Network news won’t solvethe problem because George Stephanopolous still has a job, so theyclearly don’t recognize their own failures.

The time is right for Iron Chef Oval Office . Head-to-head competition on national television, creativity andcraft on display for the voters to see. We could even include acouple of 800 numbers allowing viewers to text their vote for thewinner, creating the nation’s first genuinely interactivepre-election opinion poll. True, the ability to improvise fivedelectable dishes that feature sweet potatoes or Cornish game henmay not provide an accurate insight into who can most deftlynavigate the foreign policy challenges facing America on nearlyevery continent (as far as I know, we have no impending crisis inAustralia) or how to manage an economy that is driving over a cliffwith a tank full of $5 a gallon gas, but the traditional debatesoffer no such insights, either. And at least Iron Chef Oval Office would be fun to watch.

Idea-Spice deal under government scrutiny

Idea-Spice deal under government scrutiny

DoT merger and acquisition guidelines do not allow the merger oftwo operators in the same service area until three years after thelicense grant date. Both Spice and Idea hold GSM licenses forKarnataka and Punjab, and Spice holds licenses for four new serviceareas where Idea already operates.

The DoT also said the share purchase agreement between Idea andSpice violates the "substantial equity" clause of telecom license, which restricts one service provider to hold more than 10% stake inanother in the same circle.

The companies have the option of surrendering licenses inoverlapping circles, but the entry fee is non-refundable, resultingin a loss of INR 8.43 billion ($197m).

Add a little credit crunch to spice up your pizza at Domino's

Add a little credit crunch to spice up your pizza at Domino's

warned of further "modest" price increases early next year ascost pressures continue.

Industry experts believe that fast-food companies stand to benefitduring the credit crunch, with pizza, burger and fried chickentakeaway meals becoming the family treats of choice.

Mid-market restaurant chains are likely to feel the squeeze.

Domino's chairman Stephen Hemsley said: "The trend that we arewitnessing so far is that many consumers are 'trading down', whichmeans that they are eating out less often and staying at home."

The firm also confirmed it would push ahead with plans to increaseits UK and Irish estate to 1,000 by 2017.

Domino's was set up in the US in 1960 and now operates in more than50 countries. It opened its first UK store in 1985 before pushinginto Ireland six years later. The London-listed business holds themaster franchise to own, operate and franchise Domino's Pizzastores in the UK and Ireland.

During the first six months of the year, 25 outlets were opened, with a similar number earmarked for the second half of thefinancial year.

A spokesman for the company said Scotland, where 40 franchisedstores already operate, would feature strongly in the expansionplans.

Duff divas need to Spice up their act

Duff divas need to Spice up their act

Duff divas need to Spice up their act

Brian Reade 29/11/2007

I used to be so hot for Catatonia's Cerys Matthews that every otherfemale singer left me dead from the waist down.

I thought she was risky and clever with a sexy Welsh lilt. I lovedhow she stuck two fingers up to the showbiz establishment withlyrics like: "London never sleeps, it just sucks, the life out ofme and the money from my pocket."

Had her down as a right little rebel, I did.

But now, watching her in that refuge for battered reputations, thatgreat pantomime casting couch in the jungle, I realise she's asrock'n'roll as Mavis Wilton.

A pouty, man-pleasing, spunkless, manipulative, self-obsessedgirlie. Shallower than an Ant and Dec's paddling pool and with solittle class she's fallen head over heals for a narcissistic lumpof beefcake who used to bump into scenery on EastEnders.

Cerys is a rock goddess no more. And she's not alone. The bestBritish female voice I'd heard since hers belongs to Amy Winehouse.

Yes, she's a messed-up wreck who most days looks like theunderneath of a pig farmer's fingernails. But I loved thatnicotine-stained voice of a fallen angel. That rough, brassy edge. That soul.

And now. Now she cries off from a tour because her rich boy hubbyis held on remand. She takes the easy option and lets downcountless people, not just the fans but the band, the crew, thestaff.

She plays the poor little girlie who is unable to do her jobwithout lover-boy holding her hand, throws in a doctor's note andheads into rehab to protect her from a cruel world. And we see heras the spoilt middle-class princess that she is.

Spice buyout in line with M&A norms, Idea tells DoT

MUMBAI: Idea Cellular has written to the department of telecom(DoT) arguing that its acquisition of 40.8% stake in Spice Communications qualifies as a permissible merger of licences in theoverlapping service areas.

In the absence of policy clarity, if the DoT feels otherwise, Ideasaid it was willing to surrender licences for Punjab and Karnataka, the circles which have come into its fold through the acquisitionof Spice. Idea had received licences for these two circles inJanuary. Also, Idea holds licences for Andhra Pradesh, Delhi,Maharashtra and Haryana. Spice had also received licences in thesecircles in January.

Go somewhere cheap'n'cheerful, said The New Lady Editor, possiblyinspired by articles about how people can't afford to eat out inthe economic climate, or don't want to in the meteorological one.Bet the Fraternity of Haricot-Enumerators has been checking theViva Visa bill again. Well, here we go then.

We were half a minute out of Hamilton when the hitch-hikers kickedin. Two German lads and a Japanese lass, heading for the plane toJakarta tomorrow. Meeting friends at a backpackers in Mt Eden. Wedropped them off and ...

"It's the supermarket or a cheap'n'cheerful," said Jude. "Funny youshould say that," said I. "There's a carpark. What about the placeover the road?"

Aaah, winter. That time of the twelve-month for strong flavours,slow-cooking cheaper cuts of meat, gutsy root veges and gravy. Weparked opposite the Indian and settled in for a curry.

Have you noticed how cold too many eateries are? This one was. Judeasked the man to turn up the heater. He found a spare remote andpointed it at the grille in the roof. He may have wanted to seewhat was on the Discovery Channel. For all the good it did.

We should talk about the food. It is, as so many of you have beenkind enough to point out, what we are supposed to be here for.Well, this is a North Indian place.

They do curries. Lots of them. Aromas and herbs and spices andgravies and I absolutely defy you to tell me that you can determinewhether they contain what it says on the menu or not.

They're soupy, sloppy, you spoon the rice on to your plate andladle the cubes of ... "Did we order the chicken or the lamb?" ...on top of it, or beside it, depending on your personalpredilections.

Gobbets slobber on to the tablecloth or paper as the case may be,you slurp it up, you lick your fingers and that's more than likelythe best part of the meal. There are naan or were they roti and youuse them to slollop up the sauce. ("Slollop". I just made up thatword. Don't you think it's absolutely perfect for that moment whenyou dip your pancake in, and get a slurp of sauce or a dollop ofmeat and rice?)

Ask me what we ordered. I'll have to check the bill. Apparentlythere was a chicken and fenugreek thingie and a saagwalawhatchamacallit and a pakora hows-your-father. Beers of somedenomination. Talk to any Indian pal and they'll tell you everyonemeasures the sub-continental restaurants in Auckland against Satya. They'll complain it's unfair, that there are different cuisinesfrom the North and South or anywhere else in the cricket league, and holding up Satya as the Big Chilli is like comparing Tuscanagainst Neapolitan, or Ponsonby real estate against Otara. I knowit's unfair but there it is.

Sheer coincidence, I was chatting to a chef mate a night or twolater. He'd been at a function in Mt Eden and been recommended toeat at the same place. Knows his food. Especially Indian. "Allgravy and no flavour," he said.

Cheap and cheerful? Well, it cost $51.70 so that's easy on thewallet. I guess we got it half-right.
